Steve contributed his significant talent to give back to his hometown as he sings with the children of St. James School in St. Joseph, Missouri. Steve lends his voice and other musical abilities on Father Rogers' latest Christmas CD with a new version of the John Lennon classic, "Happy Christmas.” A graduate of St. James School himself, it was Steve’s request that the children of the school sing with him on this song. This is a great collector's item! All proceeds will go to St. James School, St. Joseph, MO, and donations are highly encouraged. Look at the "Kansas"-subject of this website for the link! With a nudge from his mother, June Walsh, who still lives in St. Joe, Walsh agreed to be featured on the school's latest fundraiser Christmas CD entitled "Remember the One, A Christmas Collection with Father Rogers." Proceeds from the Christmas CD will help buy new books, school equipment and make repairs to the Michigan Avenue school building that serves more than 200 students at the historic south side parish. " I told Steve that Father Rogers had asked him to be a part of the Christmas CD," Mrs. Walsh said. " It was as simple as that. Steve's only request was to pick the Christmas song he would sing." Walsh selected the John Lennon/Yoko Ono song "Happy Christmas" which leads off the collection of songs on the Christmas CD. Walsh also requested that he sing with the schoolchildren, which is why is he was accompanied by the St. James School choir on the "Happy Christmas" rendition. "I wanted to do it for the school," Steve Walsh said later. The inspiration for the CD came from Father Vince Rogers, the young pastor at St. James Parish, who collaborated with St. James musical director, Faith Girard as well as area St. Joe musicians to produce the first CD "Christmas with Father Rogers." It was such a fundraising success that Father Rogers prepared for a second production. This time he added some "star power" to his collection of Christmas music. Walsh agreed to lend his vocals to the background music of the children's choir. The children's background tract was actually recorded in the sanctuary of St. James Church and then sent on to Walsh who added his vocals. "We're grateful for Steve's contribution to the CD," Father Rogers said, "His commitment to our small school is a gift and a wonderful Christmas story." Walsh attended St. James School from first through eighth grades and he remains very close to the school, according to his mother. He graduated in 1965 from St. James and went on to high school in St. Joe. His musical interest started early. "At age three he said he was going to be a singer." Mrs. Walsh said. "He started playing piano at age five and at age 19 he joined a band. I'm very proud of him."
